Accommodations for Snowbirds
Surfside Beach is a quiet, warm village of about 700 residents, some of the most friendly and fun-loving Texans you’ll ever be lucky enough to meet.
Even though it is a small village, Surfside currently has over 730 lovely beach house rentals that are largely unoccupied in the winter. This low occupancy rate means that prices are low and owners are eager to find snowbirds to stay for 1-4 months from mid-October through mid-March.
Many of these lovely beach homes have gorgeous 180 degree ocean views and are decorated beautifully to attract summer guests, but in winter the rent is shockingly inexpensive because only 10% of the vacation rentals in Surfside are booked from November through February and there are so many beach house rentals competing for snowbirds.
Here are some examples of excellent snowbird rental options, but anyone can message a property on via Airbnb or VRBO and make an offer; many Surfside Beach vacation rental owners are hoping to find a winter snowbird.
You can save a significant amount of fees (18-25% of rent) by bypassing the Airbnb / VRBO platforms and booking directly with an owner.

There is also a Facebook page to connect owners and renters that makes it easy to message many at once.
There are also several RV parks along the beachfront, where road warriors can park their RVs for long periods of time and enjoy the scenery and local personalities.
Temperate Weather Winter Vacation Spots
Once hurricane season is over (end of November), Surfside has temperate weather all through the winter (last year we only had one day below freezing temps). Surfside has over 4 miles of beach and provides snowbirds with beautiful sunrises and sunsets that make any winter beach vacation special.
Unlike many beachside winter vacation spots, all the restaurants in Surfside stay open all year, and the much larger town of Lake Jackson is only 20 minutes away with everything you need (Target, Home Depot, lots more restaurants etc). Modern conveniences like delivery of groceries and pizza are all available on the island.
Things to do on a Winter Beach Vacation
There is a lot of fun to be had on the island; here are some examples:
- Fishing charters
- Watch the frequent surfing competitions (home of the best surfing waves in Texas)
- Dolphin tours (with jet skis)
- Three museums
- Live music (3 venues, with live music every night by local bands)
- Historic Fort Velasco, where the first battle for Texas Independence was fought
- A variety of migratory birds come through Surfside in the winter, and birdwatchers from all over Texas visit to try to see them all.
- Golf cart rentals
- Horseback riding on the beach
- Crabbing at the famous crabbing pier
- Jetty park & splash pad
- Watching the huge ships move through the port
As you would expect, the restaurants on the island have amazing seafood near snowbird accommodation, and you can sit on a deck right over the beach at two of the best restaurants.
Cost of Living for Texas Snowbirds Winter Rentals
Surfside is a much less expensive place to live than most winter vacation spots in Texas. Compared to any other beachfront Texas snowbirds winter rentals, it is extremely affordable.
Renting a two-bedroom unit in Surfside Beach costs $1,110 per month, which is 22.4 percent cheaper than the national average of $1,430 and 15.3 percent cheaper than the state average of $1,280.
Texas’ Best-kept Secret for Snowbird Accommodation
I grew up in Austin Texas, and regularly enjoy a winter beach vacation on the Texas coast with my family every year. We often visit Port Aransas, South Padre Island, Galveston, and Rockport.
However, I didn’t discover Surfside Beach until I was 37 years old. Many Texans don’t know about Surfside Beach winter vacation spots, and I love sharing the news, because I think Surfside is the best-kept secret in Texas.
